What is a Podcast?

A podcast is a digital media file, or a related collection of such files, which is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers. Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be syndicated, subscribed to, and downloaded automatically when new content is added, using an aggregator or feed reader capable of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.  It is an XML file (which is similar to HTML) for distributing content.  Users can subscribe to your podcast or blog via an RSS feed.  When anything new is published in the web site the RSS feed is updated. Your reader then checks your feeds every few minutes (just like your e-mail) and shows the newest updates.  In otherwords, instead of surfing to your favorite sites to see if anything has changed - the content comes to you!
